The first and most important step in becoming convincing

75% of the people that present me their prepared presentation for the first time are not convincing. This does not mean that they did not do their best. Nor does it have anything to do with their intelligence. It is simply a matter of not knowing and realizing what you need as a presenter to be convincing. Read down below what you can do as the first and most important step in becoming convincing as a presenter.

You could compare it to building a house. What you need first and foremost is a strong foundation. Once you have this firm foundation, it will be easier to built the rest of the house and all that you will built from this strong foundation will be firm and look real nice. This in contrast to if you built it on a shaky and crooked foundation. The result will be; crooked walls, a chimney on a roof that will fall off, a floor that will be impossible to walk on.

In other words the reason that people are often not convincing is because they often fail to have a clear plan/foundation and forget to ask themselves important questions to create this foundation. I can teach people skills to be more convincing in the body language and voice technique department, but if you do not have a clear plan; it obviously is not going to help you. It will be mere window-dressing. Content and body language needs to be congruent. If this is the case you can become truly convincing!

One of the results of "standing on a firm foundation" will automatically be, that you will feel much more confident. And once you feel confident this will automatically be visible and audible once you present.

Another result will be that you will connect much better to your audience if you prepare yourself and ask the right questions beforehand. Questions like; what do I have to offer my public? Why would they listen to my story? What is my message in one, short, specific sentence? What is special, unique about my research, story or information?

If you fail to ask these questions from the start, you will forget to make your presentation from the perspective of the public and will fail in the first step, the preparation, to make the bridge to your public. You will create your presentation based on solely content and this will not be enough to convince your audience.

In short in order to have a strong foundation, you need to have a clear plan and ask yourself the right questions to make this plan. Do you want to know what these questions are and what you can do to make a clear plan for yourself?
