3 ways to become absolutely unconvincing!

Do you fail getting people into your story? Do you one way or another have the feeling that people do not buy into your presentation? In short that you are not convincing? Then read the article down below and see if you apply one, two or even three of the ingredients described down below and try to twist your behavior 180% degrees around. So, that next time you present, you will get around the blah, blah, blah.

To me being convincing is something that intrigues me endlessly. Why is one person getting the public on their side in even so much as 2 minutes effortlessly, while the other seems to work like a log for half an hour and nothing happens? What is the secret?

This is not something that can be explained in just one article. There are many reasons, and they have to do with the use of language, your presentation plan, attachment to the subject, mindset, tone and volume of voice, posture, structure of your presentation, contact with the public etcetera.

However, find down below three ingredients that, spoken from experience, happen most of the times. And changing them around, could easily turn around your presentation from a 2 on the scale of being convincing to a 7, next time you´ll present.

1)    If you want to be sure to be as unconvincing as possible, it is a good idea to be as incongruent in your behavior as you possibly can be.
What this means is saying A, but showing in your non-verbal language B. The public immediately intuitively picks up on that and gets the signal something is not quite right there. It is confusing and therefore very unconvincing. An example of this is a person that says that his work is his passion, while he has a neutral face and uses a very slow, monotone voice.  Would you buy into that?

Do you remember the Iraqi information minister exclaiming on television that victory was near during the Kuwait invasion? Saying this, while the studio barely remained erect, due to the heavy bombings that were simultaneously going on. Well, something like that…….

2)    Ingredient 2 is also a sure way to score many points on the `being unconvincing` ladder.  Use very long, unclear sentences. And above all use sentences with no clear end. The longer the sentences and the unclear the ending the better!
One of the most important factors of being convincing in presentations is the use of clear and concise sentences!

It is the one thing that makes presentation so different than written material. If you write information, people may reread as many times as they like. The oral presentation is a whole other medium. What works for articles does not work for presentations. Trying to present an article will not work.

You need to change it and make it as concise as possible! In Dutch we would say, you need to serve `hapklare brokken` (bite-size chunks), figuratively speaking.

Not clearly ending a sentence evokes confusing. It gives a sense of unfinished business. This is not convincing. You will put the audience in a "we are still waiting" mood. The Americans would say, "you are not nailing it". And this is exactly what happens. What you are saying is not nailed to the floor, it is still floating in the air. Besides this, everything that has been carefully built up previously, will go down the toilet.

Clear, concise sentences with a clear beginning and clear end gives the audience a complete and round feeling and are by definition convincing.

3)    Do not mention the gain of your information or message!  Make sure not to mention how the public will profit from your information. Make sure to withhold why your information is of use is a sure way to finally win the "being unconvincing" contest.

Why would you bother and listen as an audience and get convinced of the importance of the subject or information, if the gain is not mentioned? What happens in practice so often is that people forget to mention this!! While this is such an incredible important ingredient to `sell` your presentation and your information. It is crucial in getting your audience on board and convincing them!!

Telling me as an audience that the presentation will be about the different aspects of social media will not get my motor running and will not convince me of the importance of the subject. However, if the gain is mentioned, for example that after this presentation I will know how to do my work in less time, that I will be able to reach 10 times more people than I am reaching now, that it is a great way to get help from people that are in the same business . Only then will I move to the tip of my chair.

It is very important to work out all the gains and to mention them clearly and in a concrete way in order to be convincing. You need to tickle the hunger button of your audience consciously. Also, here you have to serve the gains as nice easy accessible presents on a silver tray.

So in short, make sure to be incongruent, make long sentences with no clear ending and leave out for sure the gain! This will make you the true champ of being unconvincing! Hopefully you will twist them 180% around next time you present. Good luck with it!
